Horse-Therapy Ltd have wide national and international experience in the design,
construction and operation of horse swimming facilities. The benefits of swimming to the
horse are well documented and most large stud and training venues now feature equine
Swimming stimulates cardio-vascular activity and promotes improved respiration in an
impact free exercise environment. Horses recovering from strains and muscle ailments
improve rapidly with regular water therapy. Swimming, when combined with other
exercise regimes builds muscular strength, stamina and flexibility.
Once the size, shape and design criteria have been established, the water treatment
system needs to be designed.(see the ‘How to design & build a horse swimming pool’
section of this site) When building the water purification plant, the total volume of the pool,
the use or not of water-jets and the frequency of use need to be considered.
Water Jets are used to increase the flow of water in the pool. Usually three settings are
available. First, no jets in operation the horse swims freely. This allows the horse to swim
at its own pace in a relaxed manner. Secondly, stage 1 jet power with just two of the four
jets operating. The water flow against the horse requires more effort in swimming and a
higher level of exercise is achieved. Thirdly, with stage 2 jet power selected up to 20
gallons per second of water are displaced against the swimming horse. This is usually
employed when horses are approaching peak fitness.
A water analysis is required from the local water supply company. This will reveal the TDS
(total dissolved solids) present and the chemical salts and minerals present. These affect
the type of water treatment required.
The pool volume, the use of water jets and the predicted usage (termed pool load) per 24
hours of the facility dictate the size of the water treatment plant needed. There are
several types of primary water filtration systems available.
Water skimmers with basket filters
Water skimmers take surface water from the top level of the pool (80% of the dirt is
suspended in the top 20% of the pool) These skimmers have removable basket filters
that trap hair, leaf and other large dirt particles. They need to be cleaned on a daily basis.
Hydro-cyclone filters are usually used prior to the main multimedia filter units. These
filters are so named as they spin the water (like a water centrifuge) allowing the heavier
dirt particles to separate from the fine particles.
Equipool Ultra Filtration System
The Equipool Ultra filtration system incorporates high-tech innovations to provide water
of the highest quality and clarity. Enclosed in low maintenance stainless steel containers
the system requires minimum maintenance.
These units contain removable cartridges that filter out the finer dust and dirt down to a
very fine level.
These units are the heart of the filtration process. The large filters contain a sand/gravel
filter bed. The water flows through the media where very fine particles (cloudiness) are
removed. These are usually arranged in banks as the water flow should not be too high
since filtration will reduce in these circumstances. The water will form channels through
the media over a period of time, thus reducing the effectiveness of the filter. Regular
back-washing prevents this and can be automated if required.
Chemical Dosing and Chlorine Generators
Once the dirt and fine dust has been removed from the water it is necessary to remove
bacteria, micro organisms and other undesirable organic matter. If the pool is chlorine
based, a system for adding the chlorine and other chemicals needed must be installed
and monitored. Again, this process can be automated if required.
Most new pools and upgrades use saltwater technology that dramatically reduces the
chlorine content. Reducing the chlorine concentration eliminates eye/skin irritation and
other disadvantages associated with chlorine pools. Saltwater pools utilise automatic
chlorine generation and saline dispensers. Automatic monitoring of the water quality is
available and can be conducted remotely if required.
Ultra Violet Sterilisation and Disinfection
This final process involves passing the water through ultra violet radiation that destroys
bacteria and unwanted organic material.
Training, Testing & Control
It is possible to design, build and install the best horse swimming pool in the world but it
